Two tips on how to gauge proximity to your client within the concentric rings of security.

-Eyes inside out

-Eyes outside in

For example:

Eyes inside out

When you are at Disneyland with your child and the park is crowded and filled with possible threats, you are more likely to stay within arms reach of your child (client), scanning from “inside the formation” outward looking for threats.

Eyes outside in

When you are at a park within your neighborhood and your child is playing on the jungle gym, you are in a relatively safe known area. You may take on more of a “surveillance” role searching the surrounding area for possible threats with eyes looking outside in.
